Vinyasa-flow yoga classes focus on releasing tension and stress, toning muscles, balancing, and breathing. Each yoga posture gently flows from one pose to the next, linking the movement with focused breath. Yoga is a wonderful way to create peace of mind and balance in your life.

Jen Andrews, a Certified Yogafit instructor has been practicing yoga for 8 years, including vinyasa flow and hot yoga. She joined Yogafit teacher training in 2007, and continues attending Mind, Body, & Fitness seminars and other trainings throughout the year. She also trains in Taekwondo and Crossfit, enhancing her knowledge of how yoga compliments other workout routines. She is a mother of two, and finds that yoga is a great one-hour escape from the stresses of parenthood. Come find out how yoga can be your one-hour escape from the busy world we live in.

What Is Yoga?

Although it seems like a hot new trend, yoga actually began more than 3,000 years ago in India. The word yoga comes from Sanskrit, and it means to "yoke," or bring together the mind, body, and spirit.

Although yoga includes exercise it is also a lifestyle for which exercise is just one component. Disciplining your mind and body as well as connecting with your spirituality are the main goals of the yoga lifestyle.

The physical component of the yoga lifestyle is called hatha yoga. Hatha yoga focuses on asanas, or poses. A person who practices yoga goes through a series of specific poses while controlling his or her breathing. Some types of yoga also involve meditation and chanting. Classes are taught by certified instructors and classes are offered only at the Maple Grove, Delano, and Rockford locations.

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (and as reported here by Reuters), attending specially designed hatha yoga classes was shown to improve the stress levels and sense of well-being of breast cancer patients. It's good to see yoga's benefits validated by the health-care establishment because it encourages people who might never have considered doing yoga to try it. And even though Breast Cancer Awareness month is almost over, you can still get a pink Yogitoes Skidless.
